Loss of Brake Fluid

More brake help

If you need to top up your brake fluid by a large amount (a small amount could just be brake pad wear if over a long period of time) you must have a leak! Don’t drive the vehicle, if you look under the car you will normally see the back of the wheel is damp with brake fluid, this will normally be caused by a leaking wheel cylinder (see picture) or leaking brake calliper.

What Else Could Cause Brake Fluid to Go Down?

Note most hydraulic clutches use the brake fluid reservoir, they are connected half way down so will never take the fluid below the minimum, but a leak will put the low brake fluid light on, check for leaks between engine and gearbox, you would normally have difficulty selecting gears if this is the problem.
