Manufactures are under increased pressure to lower emissions, this has forced them to look for weight saving where possible, but at the same time drivers want more equipment (air conditioning etc.). Suspension is heavy so there are large gains to be made, up to 2kg per strut but the cost is more suspension springs breaking on cars of no age.
